Mayors Youth Recreation Sponsorship Initiative

The objective of this wonderful new initiative is to match individuals, service organizations or businesses that would like to sponsor a needy child or children in one or more of Stamford Recreation Services programs throughout the year.

Mayor Dan Malloy stated, “all children in the City should have an equal opportunity to participate in after school activities and recreation programs, such as swimming lessons, sports, camps, etc.  However, not every family can afford to enroll their child(ren)   in such programs.  This initiative will allow such families the opportunity to have their child(ren) become actively involved in organized after school and recreation programs”.

Stamford Recreation Services will manage a database of sponsors and a lottery of children and link them together. Sponsors will pay directly for the child’s program, and the parent or guardian of the child will be responsible for getting them registered and to the program.  Children and their families will be kept anonymous to the donor.  Sponsors may designate the specific program that they would like to sponsor a child in, or they may sponsor whichever program the next child in the lottery requests.  Sponsors may also make a donation in any amount that will be applied to a child’s program fee.   “What a great way for the average citizen to make a difference in the life of a needy child”, stated Superintendent of Recreation, Laurie Albano.

Sponsorship forms for children will be available at the Stamford Recreation Services office and on their web site at www.stamfordrecreation.com.  All Stamford youth between the ages of 3 and 13 who are qualified to receive free lunch in the Stamford school system will be eligible.  Private or parochial school children must meet the same personal financial criteria to qualify for the public school free lunch program.

Upcoming spring programs include Art’s & Crafts, Sports and Movement classes, Story Time, Cartooning, Tae Kwon – Do, Pottery, Cooking, Dance, Science, Spring Vacation Camp, Swim Lessons, Jr. Girl’s Softball, and T-Ball.  Interested sponsors and recipients should contact the Recreation Services Division at 977-5214 for further information.
